15 September 2020 Wills, Trusts & Estates Alan Roughead

As a member of SOPS (Solicitors for Older People Scotland), Macnabs is dedicated to providing legal support to older people in a caring and sensitive way. The Macnabs team recognise and know how to support clients with dementia, having participated in Dementia Awareness training from Alzheimer Scotland. With a greater understanding of the different types of dementia and how it affects the brain and behaviours, the team are able to ensure that those with dementia, as well as their families and carers, can have the right legal advice and support in the areas they need most.

This often involves preparing a Power of Attorney for clients who may be facing the onset of dementia.

A Power of Attorney is a great tool which provides you with the power to act early and be in charge of what happens to you should you lose mental capacity and be unable to make decisions for yourself regarding your health and welfare. It is is a legal document that lets you (the granter) appoint one or more people (the attorney) to help you make decisions on your behalf. When you grant a Power of Attorney you appoint someone you trust to look after your financial affairs and also, if you choose, they can make decisions on your welfare, such as your personal care and medical treatment.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia and there are currently estimated to be over 46 million people worldwide living with dementia. There is one new case of dementia worldwide every three seconds and the number of people affected is set to rise to over 131 million by 2050. It is therefore vital to understand more about this disease and this month will mark the 9th World Alzheimer's Month, the international campaign to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia.

At Macnabs our solicitors offer practical solutions to your legal problems, drawing on many years experience and in-depth professional expertise. The team also participated in Hearing Loss Awareness training and have a better understanding of the barriers faced by those with hearing loss and therefore can ensure they can access the legal services that they need.

We have a practical, down to earth approach, and offer straight-forward and friendly advice. Whatever your age or your lifestyle, don’t put off appointing a Power of Attorney. Act now – nobody knows what is around the corner.
